Oma Häme is improving patient care efficiency through smarter data management
Together with 2M-IT, we helped Oma Häme improve its patient care operations with a Situational Awareness application built on Microsoft Power Platform and Azure cloud technology.

The challenge
Oma Häme sought to develop information flow to enhance the efficiency of patient care. At the nurses’ station, handwritten notes and whiteboards were commonly used to convey daily status updates. These jotted notes and fragmented systems caused delays and inaccuracies in information sharing, which weakened operational efficiency and also had an impact on patient safety.
There was a critical need for a real-time, interoperable, and intelligent situational overview to support hospital bed allocation, shift scheduling, patient transfers, and bed cleaning. In addition, the need to improve doctors’ work in planning patient rounds was consistently highlighted.
The solution
As part of a broader initiative led by Oma Häme and supported by 2M-IT, Tietoevry Tech Services developed the Situational Awareness application using Microsoft Power Platform and Azure cloud technologies. This smart application replaces physical notes and provides an efficient way to present essential patient information, sourced directly from the Lifecare electronic health record system.
The application was launched in Oma Häme in February 2024. Today, it also interacts with other Power Apps developed within the project, forming a cohesive and efficient patient bed management system. The app is currently in use across all central hospital wards and the emergency department, with regional expansion plans underway. Using agile development methods, new features will continue to be added throughout 2025.
The feedback from the nurses’ station has been very positive, as the application has helped to get rid of extra notes, papers, and marker pens.
With the Situational Awareness app, every doctor on the ward can see the patients they’re responsible for, along with the attending nurse’s details. It makes work easier!”

The Situational Awareness app has now been in use at Oma Häme for about a year. It supports daily care work on hospital wards through digital solutions. Our priority is to promote regional well-being and operational efficiency. With new digital and agile methods, we can better meet our clients’ needs. Tietoevry Tech Services has been an essential partner in developing this solution.”
Roni Turtiainen, Development Manager, 2M-IT Oy
The management of daily operations and situational awareness are extremely important functions in healthcare and social services. When we couldn’t find an existing solution that met our needs, we decided to develop one ourselves, together with three other wellbeing services counties and 2M-IT. System independence was an important feature for us from the start, so we deliberately avoided building the solution inside any existing application. Tietoevry Tech Services has done a really good job from day one, listening to users and the requirements of the hospital project. Now we have an extremely easy-to-use, scalable and daily evolving system that has a positive impact on the operations of the entire wellbeing services county.”
Harri Halinen, ICT and Technology Project Manager, Ahvenisto Hospital Project
The Situational Awareness application has been continuously developed in an agile and responsive way based on feedback and ideas from hands-on professionals. In internal medicine wards, it has become an extremely important everyday tool for managing patient flow, used across professional roles. Every nurse can see the real-time ward status directly from their own workstation. A major advantage is that incoming patients can be taken into account in the system even before they appear on the ward’s bed map via the electronic health record. Departing patients are visible to all professional groups (e.g., secretaries, ward pharmacists) simultaneously. The application also makes it easy to plan patient discharges for the upcoming days. Internal medicine wards involve multiple specialties and thus have a lot of different doctors, but the app allows the nurse to see at a glance the attending physician’s name and phone number—it simplifies and accelerates everyday collaboration. The nurses’ shifts, including their start and end times, are also visible, helping to align staffing needs with patient care. The Situational Awareness app is visually clear and provides users with a great deal of information about the ward’s overall status with one glance. For once, we have a tool that genuinely supports and simplifies our daily work—it’s a keeper!”
